6th January - Buenos Aires / Tigre
Another tour today, This one further afield, to Tigre and the delta of the Luján River. We have an hours and a bit drive on the freeway through the less affluent suburbs of Buenos Aires. Less high rise, more bright colours but a lot more crumbling down.
The Tigre area is an interesting mix of "renovators delight" architecture with some notable newer, larger structures. The area has rowing clubs from the early 1900's glory days, with their large club houses, well manicured gardens and outdoor dining / drinks patios. Other buildings need some TLC. There is a museum of local art in one of the more grander buildings, a former social club overlooking the river.
We visit a market of sorts, but more a furniture / home wares market with large display areas and anything from tables and chairs down to mugs. Not something a tourist needs to purchase.
After lunch we move onto the port (used to be a fruit / vegetable port but the river is now too shallow to take the bigger boats) to catch our ferry back to Buenos Aires. These are islands that have over the years accommodated holiday homes and permanent residents alike. Some homes are roomy and well kept, others are more rustic! All have jetties as movement is via water only. There are local ferries for people to move from home to work or school, plus "supermarket" boats offering anything from gas bottles and simple homewares to a large selection of food stuff. You tie a ribbon on your jetty to ask them to stop there. Some jetties I think you take your life in your hands to go out on. The permanent to holiday residents is about 60 / 40 so the the river can get very busy with ferries, motor boats and jet skis.
