5th January - Buenos Aires
We book a city tour starting 2:00pm. That was lucky as we were up late. Needed the sleep.
Our tour takes us on a journey through the history of independence and the golden age for Argentina, the crash around the depression with immigration from Europe to modern day suburbs with high rise, parks and shopping.
First part, the history and golden age. Plazas named after the liberators of Argentina, monuments for various generals, and the main government building copying the late nineteenth / early twentieth century of England and European buildings. The English built the railroad system so no wonder the grand station looks like something out of a major city in England. There is still a changing of the guard, the protectors of the tomb of the Liberator (Father) of Argentina, José de San Martín.
The district of La Boca / Caminito where immigrants from Europe (mainly Italians and Spanish) came and settled in corrugated iron huts, brightly painted to brighten the day. A couple of the streets really set up for the tourists, are lined with cafes, statues, market stalls and cobble stones. An interesting walk, but very quick as we only have limited time.
No pictures for the last section as nothing of great note to report.
Dinner was down the road in a local cafe. Not real Argentinian food, but a nice burger with a beer.
So much history, bet you enjoyed the beer as well. 😁
