11th January - We are here 🧊🐧

We have arrived in Antartica. We have crossed into the Antarctic Circle this morning and by wake up we have found our first ice sheet and "parked". This is Hanusse Bay. From our balcony we can see mountains, ice, more ice, some seals and ...... wait for it ....... a penguin.

Isn't my penguin so cute!

As we are parked by the ice we can walk off the boat and walk on the snow and ice. The first for the season and all rugged up with our new coats and life vests. What a great time we had.

Next we are off on our Zodiac journey. We are the first group. We get up close to various sizes of iceberg. But best of all we come across a sleeping Leopard Seal with a Brown Skua for company.

What a fantastic morning we have had. We move to Detaille Island for the afternoon, which from 1956 to 1959 was the home to "Base W" of the British Antarctic Survey. Due to resupply problems the base was abandoned on very short notice in 1959 and the huts that survive are a time capsule of the 1959 era.

The weather turns to overcast, then to showers and then to snow for the rest of the afternoon and the evening. We have dinner at the Asian Fusion Restaurant at Ko Ko's and attend the quiz night.

What a fantastic first day in Antarctica ... may the weather be great for tomorrow. Ted of course kept an eye on us durng the day.
